New Railway Service Connects Scandinavia and China

23.03.2020

Joint-stock company «United Transport and Logistics Company — Eurasian Rail Alliance» (UTLC ERA), in cooperation with Baltic Sea Bridge an brand of Mukran Port Terminal, Kaliningrad Railway and the port of Baltiysk, launches a new regular multimodal container service from Scandinavia to China and back using the CIM/SMGS uniform consignment note.

The new service will considerably simplify the logistics and the time and cut the costs of cargo transportation. Traditionally, Scandinavian consignors had to consolidate their cargoes on large European terminals, such as Hamburg or Duisburg, for further transportation by land. Now this is no longer necessary. The cargo will arrive by ship at the port of Mukran for further processing and then documented and shipped via a multimodal container service via the port of Baltiysk and further through the territories of Lithuania, Belarus, Russia and Kazakhstan using the CIM/SMGS uniform consignment note. It will take cargoes just 15 days to travel from the Swedish port to the destination in China, as opposed to 60 days it would take if the cargo were delivered by sea. Freight trains will be sent weekly, forming pairs of trains in opposite directions. «The choice that we provide to European consignors in terms of new logistical solutions and directions is especially important today. The advantageous geographical location of the port of Mukran will allow to considerably reduce the time needed to deliver cargoes from Scandinavia to China, making it unnecessary to consolidate the cargoes in the heart of Europe, which is especially significant in current conditions of temporary suspension of terminal operations due to the outbreak of the coronavirus. I am confident that this route will become promising, and will lead to a considerable increase in the volume of cargoes transported by railways,» said Alexey Grom, General Director of Joint-stock company «United Transport and Logistics Company — Eurasian Rail Alliance.»
